The Smart Couple’s Guide to Choosing the Right Maldives Island

With 150+ resorts, it’s dangerously easy to get it wrong. Here’s how to find the island that genuinely fits you as a couple.

The Maldives looks perfect in every picture — but that’s exactly why it’s so easy to get wrong. On the surface, every resort promises white sand, turquoise water and overwater villas, but not all islands are created equal.

Choose badly, and your once-in-a-lifetime holiday can turn into a costly compromise:

  • Pick the wrong atoll and the lagoon may be cloudy with little marine life.
  • Book “luxury” and end up with a dated villa and zero privacy.
  • Dream of tranquillity but land on a busy family island full of noise.
  • Go “all-inclusive” and still get stung with endless hidden extras.
  • Expect world-class dining but get repetitive buffets.

And remember — once you’re on your island, you’re stuck. There’s no wandering to a better beach bar or restaurant down the road. Your choice has to be right first time.

That’s why the finer details matter — and why having expert guidance makes all the difference.

So let’s parachute into paradise…

First up, here’s a quick geography lesson:

The Maldives is an archipelago of around 1,200 islands, sitting serenely in the Indian Ocean about 400 miles southwest of India’s mainland.

Direct flights from the UK touch down in Malé International Airport (Velana International Airport) from where you’ll head off to your chosen slice of heaven.

The islands belong to one of 26 atolls – clusters of coral reefs – and getting there is all part of the magical Maldivian experience.

Steps from the airport’s main doors, your speed boat will be waiting for you. Alternatively, you’ll be whizzed back into the air on a seaplane or domestic flight to take you to your island paradise.

Speedboat transfers are ideal for resorts in the North and South Malé Atolls, such as One&Only Reethi Rah, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi or Anantara Veli. You’ll be stepping ashore within 20 to 60 minutes – perfect if you want to start your honeymoon right away.

Alternatively, seaplane transfers will see you soaring over luminous lagoons and coral reefs before gently touching down beside your resort’s jetty. Resorts in the outer atolls (like Noonu, Raa, Baa or Dhaalu) typically use seaplanes, with flights taking 30 to 60 minutes.

When you arrange your itinerary, you need be sure to time your international arrival before mid-afternoon, bearing in mind that seaplanes only fly during daylight hours.

For some of the even more remote atolls, such as Laamu, Haa Dhaalu or Thaa, you’ll take a short domestic flight to a local airport, followed by a scenic speedboat transfer, but once there you’ll be rewarded with the utmost privacy, pristine reefs and fewer (basically, next to no) crowds.

Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the main atolls

North Malé Atoll
Distance from Malé: 10-50 minutes by speedboat (up to 30 miles)
Transfer: Speedboat from Velana International Airport
The Maldives’ most famous and accessible atoll, home to the capital Malé and the main international airport. Expect world-class diving, lively reef breaks and the buzz of the Maldives’ most established resorts, such as Kurumba; Hilton Maldives Amingiri and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru.

South Malé Atoll
Distance from Malé: 30-60 minutes by speedboat (up to 35 miles)
Transfer: Speedboat from Velana International Airport
Quieter and more laid-back than its northern neighbour, South Malé offers easy access from the airport but a more tranquil vibe. It’s home to the likes of Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, COMO Cocoa Island and Taj Exotica Resort & Spa.

Ari Atoll
Distance from Malé: 60-75 miles west
Transfer: 25-40 minutes by seaplane or 20 minutes domestic flight + short speedboat
Split into North and South Ari, this is one of the best diving areas in the Maldives. It’s known for big marine encounters – think whale sharks, manta rays and incredible coral reefs. Ari Atoll offers a mix of ultra-luxury and mid-range resorts, including Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, LUX* South Ari Atoll Resort and Cinnamon Ellaidhoo Maldives.

Baa Atoll
Distance from Malé: Around 75 miles northwest
Transfer: 30-35 minutes by seaplane or 20 minutes domestic flight + short speedboat
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Baa is all about nature and marine life. It’s where you’ll find the legendary Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays and whale sharks gather to feed – one of the most spectacular underwater sights in the world. Eco-luxury is the theme here, with high-end resorts like Soneva Fushi leading the way, alongside Anantara Kihavah Maldives and Dhigufaru Island Resort.

Raa Atoll
Distance from Malé: Around 95 miles northwest
Transfer: 45 minutes by seaplane or 35 minutes domestic flight to Ifuru Airport + short speedboat
A rising star in the Maldives, the islands are larger and more natural than many atolls, giving a feeling of space and privacy. Resorts within the atoll include Joali Maldives, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau and The Standard.

Dhaalu Atoll
Distance from Malé: Around 95 miles southwest
Transfer: 40-45 minutes by seaplane or 30 minutes domestic flight + short speedboat
Still being discovered, Dhaalu is a mix of local islands, boutique resorts and untouched reefs. It’s known for its authentic feel, friendly locals and great drift dives. Resorts of note include The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Angsana Velavaru and Sun Siyam Iru Veli.

Noonu Atoll
Distance from Malé: About 105 miles north
Transfer: 45 minutes by seaplane
Home to some of the Maldives’ most exclusive resorts, including Soneva Jani and Cheval Blanc Randheli, Noonu is the epitome of barefoot luxury. Its lagoons are vast and it’s a haven for those who want complete seclusion with world-class service.

Thaa Atoll
Distance from Malé: Around 135 miles south
Transfer: 35-40 minutes by domestic flight to Thimarafushi Airport + short speedboat
A remote, lesser-visited atoll with pristine reefs and only a handful of resorts, most notably COMO Maalifushi Maldives. It’s a true escape – literally.

Laamu Atoll
Distance from Malé: Around 160 miles south
Transfer: 35-40 minutes by domestic flight to Kadhdhoo Airport + short speedboat
Remote and eco-conscious, Laamu is where sustainability meets style. It’s famous for Six Senses Laamu, one of the Maldives’ greenest resorts, and for its stunning surf breaks like Yin Yang.

A match made in heaven

Before I embark on pinpointing the right resort for you, it’s worth saying that to ask me to pick my favourite resorts in the Maldives is like asking a parent to choose which of their children they love the most! It’s an impossible (and cruel) task.

So, I can merely throw in suggestions to get our conversation started. I have got so many more options up our sleeves that, after chatting to you, may suit you better.

Best for Unadulterated Luxury

If your dreams include private plunge pools, personal butlers and more pampering than you ever imagined possible, these islands might be just what you’re looking for:

  • Huvafen Fushi (North Malé Atoll) is one of the original icons of Maldivian luxury – intimate, ultra-chic and home to the world’s first underwater spa. Its minimalist villas are perfectly secluded and the resort’s ‘Dream Dhonis’ (luxury boats with overnight cabins) are made for private sunset cruises or island-hopping adventures.
  • One&Only Reethi Rah (North Malé Atoll) is synonymous with celebrity-style indulgence. With vast villas, sleek modern design and an exceptional level of service, it’s a playground for honeymooners who want the very best. Expect Michelin-star dining, personal concierge service and experiences like private beach dinners or yacht charters.
  • Soneva Secret (Makunudhoo Atoll) takes privacy to another level. This tiny, ultra-exclusive island has just 14 villas, each with a ‘Barefoot Guardian’ (your personal host) and private chef. It’s the perfect hideaway for couples who want to disappear from the world. Soneva Secret can be reached via a 75-minute seaplane flight direct from Malé.

Best for Luxury All-Inclusive

Let’s be honest, once you’re in your resort, there’s no nipping down to the local supermarket to pick up snacks and drinks. You’re part of a captured market. However, of late, more resorts are embracing the all-inclusive concept – Maldivian-style. In other words, they’re redefining the concept to ensure no corners are cut. Think Champagne breakfasts, premium wines and fine dining included – perfect for couples who prefer to unwind without worrying about the bill at the end.

  • Ozen Reserve Bolifushi (South Malé Atoll) is all about indulgence – from its underwater restaurant to its personal butler service. Every detail, from the top-shelf spirits to the private yacht transfers, is included in your stay.
  • Sun Siyam Iru Fushi (Noonu Atoll) offers a more relaxed take on luxury, with 15 restaurants and bars, a serene spa and endless activities. Its all-inclusive package is wide-reaching and includes spa treatments, watersports, guided tours and snorkelling and discounts to use the airport lounge.
  • Kudadoo Maldives Private Island (Lhaviyani Atoll) raises the bar entirely: an all-inclusive resort that literally includes everything. From spa treatments and excursions to fine dining and private wine tastings – it’s all part of the experience and always entirely bespoke. You’ll take a 40-minute seaplane flight to get to the resort.

Best for Wellbeing

For couples looking to reset mind, body and soul, these resorts bring balance and bliss in equal measure.

  • Joali Being (Raa Atoll) is the Maldives’ first wellbeing-only retreat, where everything, from nutrition and movement to sleep and creativity, is tailored to your personal wellness journey. Think sound-healing sessions, oceanfront yoga and the most delectable, healthy cuisine.
  • Six Senses Laamu (Laamu Atoll) is an eco-luxury gem focused on sustainable living and holistic wellness. Its wellness programme includes an arrival wellness consultation, sleep tracking, signature massages and Ayurvedic treatments, guided meditation, yoga and breath-work sessions.
  • Anantara Veli (South Malé Atoll) is an adults-only island, perfect for couples who want rejuvenation without rigidity. It’s wellness programme includes massages, wellness assessments, a jet lag reviver and oxygen therapy session, yoga, personal training and fitness classes.

Best for Sports and Adventure

If you’re not the lie-on-the-beach type, these resorts combine Maldivian paradise with plenty of action.

  • Meeru Maldives Resort Island (North Malé Atoll) is one of the oldest and most loved resorts, famous for its array of sports: golf on its nine-hole course, windsurfing, diving, tennis and cycling. It’s a more affordable, large and laid-back resort, but couples can very easily find peace in the adults-only areas.
  • Kuredu (Lhaviyani Atoll) is another of the very few resorts in the Maldives to have a golf club. As well as a six-hole course, it’s got a full-size driving range. Plus, its watersports centre is huge. Alongside its PADI dive school, you can have private lessons in catamaran sailing, windsurfing and kiteboarding, plus have a go at no end of watersports, from water skiing to canoeing. The resort is reached in 40 minutes via seaplane from Malé.
  • Siyam World (Noonu Atoll) is an adventure playground – perfect for couples young at heart who can’t sit still, or for those who are taking their kids along with them. This vast resort boasts the Maldives’ largest floating water park, the Maldives’ only horse ranch; football pitches, an electric go-kart track and an amazing dive school.

Best for Overwater Villas

Sleeping above the lagoon is the ultimate Maldivian fantasy – and these three resorts are perfect examples.

  • Soneva Jani (Noonu Atoll) has garnered a reputation for its iconic water villas, which come complete with retractable roofs, waterslides into the sea and endless lagoon views. Add impeccable eco-luxury and world-class dining, and you have one of the most sought-after honeymoon escapes on Earth.
  • Conrad Maldives Rangali (South Ari Atoll) has an array of overwater villas with first-row seats to watch the sun set and rise. Most boast an outdoor sun deck with a whirlpool tub or plunge pool, in addition to steps leading directly into the lagoon. The Grand Water Villas also have a private spa treatment room with a mini gym and two massage beds. But that’s not all, this resort also boasts The Muraka – the world’s first underwater villa where your bedroom sits beneath the ocean surface, surrounded by tropical fish.
  • Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi (South Malé Atoll) offers divine king overwater villas. Revel in the glass floor in the dressing room, bask in the sun on your private deck, float in your private infinity pool, sway gently in your overwater hammock and open the glass walls in the bathroom to bathe outside.

Best for Dining

If food is your love language, the Maldives won’t disappoint. Many resorts host world-class chefs and inventive dining experiences.

  • Soneva Fushi (Baa Atoll) offers dining experiences unmatched in the Maldives. To access its Flying Saucers treetop restaurant guests have the choice to literally arrive via a zipline! In its over-the-water Out of the Blue restaurant, you’re presented with five distinct dining experiences under one roof - from teppanyaki and sushi to just-grilled seafood and secret menus by Michelin-starred guest chefs. To keep up the pace, throughout the year, renowned chefs, sommeliers and culinary artisans take up dining residencies at the resort.
  • Velaa Private Island (Noonu Atoll) is a culinary revelation, with overwater restaurant Aragu leading the way in sustainable haute cuisine. The resort’s other dining experience takes place at Tavaru, the highest restaurant in the Maldives, some 22 meters above the sand. Take an elevator to the top floor, where fire-red sunset views and a sizzling teppanyaki grill await. This resort is also rightfully proud of its extensive wine cellar, with rare vintages amongst its collection.
  • Gili Lankanfushi (North Malé Atoll) serves the most inventive menu of plant-based dishes. Vegetarians and vegans will rejoice: Chef Harinath ‘Hari’ Govindaraj makes everything on the island, from vegan ice cream to vegan cheese. The heart of the resort’s kitchen is its 100-bed garden, producing all the herbs and vegetables used to create its eight-course garden lunches. Expect inventive combinations like aloe vera and coconut ceviche with lemongrass, coconut, mint, mango and curry leaf dip – and that’s just for starters.

Best for Diving

For underwater-loving couples, these resorts are ideally placed for exploring the Maldives’ incredible reefs and marine life.

  • Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru (Baa Atoll) sits in the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll, famed for manta rays and whale sharks. The resort’s marine biology centre is world-class.
  • Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa (South Ari Atoll) offers superb access to South Ari Atoll’s famous dive sites, including the chance to see whale sharks year-round.
  • COMO Maalifushi (Thaa Atoll) combines luxury with pristine, less-visited dive sites where coral gardens and reef sharks abound – perfect for adventurous honeymooners.

Best for Budget-Friendly Bliss

You don’t need a celebrity budget to enjoy paradise – these resorts prove that romance in the Maldives can be both magical and affordable.

  • Embudu Village (South Malé Atoll) is small, simple and surrounded by one of the best house reefs for snorkelling – ideal if you’re seeking a laid-back escape without luxury price tags.
  • NH Collection Maldives Reethi Beach Resort (Baa Atoll) offers rustic-chic villas, an authentic Maldivian atmosphere and a wonderful sense of space, all at a great-value price.
  • Kurumba (North Malé Atoll) is just a 20-minute speedboat ride away from the airport and may not have those over-water villas, but that’s what makes it more affordable. Everything else is top notch so it makes a savvy choice.

When to Go

The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures averaging between 28°C and 32°C. The best time to visit is generally November to April, when you’ll find dry, sunny weather and calm seas – perfect for swimming, diving and lazy beach days.

The May to October period is considered the southwest monsoon season, bringing more humidity and short tropical showers, but also fewer crowds and lower prices. For divers, this is often the best time to spot manta rays and whale sharks.

If you’re planning to visit around Christmas, New Year or Easter then book early – these are the most popular (and most expensive) times to travel. The more notice I have, the better deal I can get you.

Combining the Maldives with Another Destination

While the Maldives is a dream in itself, it also combines beautifully with other destinations – ideal for those who want a touch of adventure or culture before (or after) their island escape.

Sri Lanka is the classic pairing. Just a short flight away, it’s rich in culture and history, offers tea plantations, wildlife safaris, temples and golden beaches – a perfect prelude to the tranquillity of the Maldives.

India and the Maldives make for a thrilling twin-centre honeymoon. Combine the Maldives’ serenity with the sensory overload of India’s vibrant cities, palaces and heritage sites – perhaps the Taj Mahal, the ultimate monument to love.

Meanwhile, the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are ideal for couples who want a dose of modern luxury and excitement before heading to the islands. Shop, dine and explore these glittering desert cities before swapping skyscrapers for sandbanks.

Whether you want a taste of culture, adventure or urban glamour, a twin-centre trip adds a wonderful contrast – and we’d love to design your perfect bespoke itinerary.
